m22 is a really noise tranny. "From what I hear", Ill tell you what you hear and it is alot of whinning.... the 2.20 gear isnt very low at all and if any gm tranny I would get the M20 if you must have the manual and but put 3.73 gears in. Truely manuals break lots of parts when raced and are not great in heavy traffic. they still hold a certain cool factor but the novality soon wears …

This is the current Muncie M22. Your can see that the layout of the geartrain is identical to the ST10's. All gears and synchronizers are in the same position. Notice how the angle of the M22 gears is much straighter than on the ST10. The noise level increased because of this angle, giving the M22 the nickname "RockCrusher."

True enough the M22 did trickle out the door in 1965-67 and was buried in the option lists. It was around 1968 that easy to find the M22 on option lists, but the significant extra cost was a way to dissuade all but the most serious of gearheads. Drain plugs came to the M22 first, as did the fine splines.

I believe all first gen Z/28s were available with only the close ratio Muncies. This would be the M21, which most had, and the M22 which very few had. You're right about the guy being way off. Guys always say they've got a rock crusher when they are refering to any Muncie, there are big differences as we know. The M20 is a great trans though.

IMHO save the close ratio gearsets of the M22 for use ahead of 3.73:1 and larger ratio rear ends, and FWIW I wouldn't go smaller than a 3.36:1 rear gear even with a wide ratio Muncie box. Forget the Muncie OD, unless it's going in your pickup truck. BTW, you can now buy high-quality M22 "rock crusher" style wide ratio gearsets!

Various gear manufactures make replacement gear sets for M22's that will fit in any case with a 1" countershaft. The replacement gear sets do not have identifying rings on the input shaft to tell the ratio.
